GEM Cars
Earlier this year, Concordia added two
Global Electric Motorcars to its fleet of on-campus vehicles. These two cars operate on battery-electric power and can be used for a variety of tasks. Physical Plant Director Wayne Flack says he had a very positive experience with the cars in another college setting and was eager to try them out at Concordia.
The college purchased the cars primarily for use by departments who wish to transport visitors on campus. They can also be checked out by departments to assist with their staff in need of mobility assistance. Unlike the other small motorized vehicles on campus, GEM cars are also street-legal, making it possible to transport people to sites further off campus, such as the Riverside Center.
When the GEM cars are not being used elsewhere on campus, the Physical Plant employees use them for their projects on campus. Both the two-seater and four-seater models are equipped with flat beds, making it easy to haul materials and equipment.
