Policies and Procedures

The following information pertains to our most common study abroad programs, Exploration Seminars and May Seminars. For policies and procedures regarding other programming, contact the Office of Global Education at 218.299.3927.

Registration
Exploration Seminars are offered during the spring or fall mid-semester breaks and May Seminars are offered during the first summer school session in May. Registrations for both are made through the Office of Global Education, Outreach Center 111.

Cost
Costs vary depending on the program. Tentative prices are listed until final prices are determined about a month before departure. Contact the Office of Global Education for more details.

Financial aid is available in some circumstances. The Financial Aid Office holds a meeting each October to provide more information.

The Office of Global Education tries in every way possible to keep costs down. Unfortunately, cost factors that have a great impact on prices (exchange rates, vagaries in international economic situations) are completely out of the office’s control. When departure dates approach, more precise costs for the seminars are available as vendors make firm contract commitments. The Office of Global Education will keep you and your seminar leader informed of cost developments as soon as possible.

Fees include: round-trip airfare, local group transportation, lodging (see below), some group meals, guide and museum/activity fees, and all instructional administrative fees. For May Seminars, all participants must pay first summer school session tuition, regardless of whether they are taking the seminar for credit. This cost is included in the May Seminar fee.

Hotel costs are based on multiple-occupancy rooms in established budget hotels, generally located close to key study sites and with European-style breakfasts included. For reasons of economy, two, three or occasionally four persons will share a room. Shared baths/showers are common in overseas hotels.

Fees do not include: personal purchases, lunch and dinner each day (some group dinners are included), personal travel during free time, or passport and visa costs.

Application
Applying for an Exploration Seminar or May Seminar requires two steps. First, you must sign up for the course containing the Exploration or May Seminar when you register in November for spring classes. Second, you must pay a deposit of $600 to the Concordia Business Office by Nov. 20 and submit a completed application form in person to the Office of Global Education also by Nov. 20.

Safety
Safety is the college’s top concern when our students travel abroad. We believe that world travel and immersion in other cultures are excellent ways to start a lifelong journey toward a better world of mutual understanding tolerance, peace and appreciation of the uniqueness of all people. But we continually monitor all State Department warnings about possible destinations, and stand ready to assist in any health-related situations. Our policy is to err on the side of caution and we are ready to change itineraries and bring seminars or individuals home should problems arise.
