Over the millennia, Chinese health care practices have been shaped and influenced by Taoist and Buddhist thought. This summer study abroad experience will focus on the influence of spirituality and culture on community health in three distinct regions of China: Hong Kong, the Henan Province and Beijing. An understanding of these rich traditions will be developed through interdisciplinary and cross-cultural dialogue with Chinese students, faculty, and health care providers. Students will engage in service learning or clinical experiences at elementary schools, a deaf school and an orphanage. We'll walk the Great Wall; explore Tiananmen Square, the Temple of Heaven and the Forbidden City; experience Chinese theater and art; barter in outdoor markets; and enjoy a traditional tea ceremony. With the ever-growing importance of China in the global context, this experience will give you the opportunity to broaden and enhance your awareness of how China influences your own academic discipline. Includes full board (breakfast, lunch and dinner) most days.

You can either enroll in Spanish 321 (Composition and Conversation in Cultural Contexts, 1.0) or a combination of Spanish 413 (Topics in Latin American Literature, 0.5) and Spanish 363 (Mexican Culture, 0.5). Those in 321 have the option to add the 363 course by paying tuition for the additional 0.5 course. All courses are taught by Concordia faculty on the campus of the University of the Americas in Mexico City. At the university you will have opportunities to make friends through organized afternoon conversation groups with Mexican students. You will also have unlimited access to all facilities including the library, computer labs, cafeteria and exercise equipment. Extended family stays are a key component of the language learning process. In addition to morning classes, you have afternoon and weekend excursions to historical sites in Mexico City, Guanajuato, San Miguel de Allende, and the pyramids of Teotihuacan. Host families will also take you to visit additional museums, theater productions, markets, and sites of cultural and historical interest. South Africa after Apartheid: Summer Courses in South Africa
Religion 339J or Sociology 328
Dr. Jan Pranger, Religion
Dr. Nick Ellig, Sociology
May 5-29, 2009
Estimated seminar cost: $5,350 plus tuition: $2,645

Imagine completing a course where your classroom is South Africa! You can have this experience completing one of these courses that combine classroom instruction with a significant experiential component that engages you with the people and places of South Africa. "World Christianity" will survey the diversity of Christianity in the non-Western world by means of a comparative methodology and illustrate essentially historical, cultural, socio-political, theological and methodological issues in the study of non-Western Christianity. "Class, Race and Ethnicity" will use South Africa and the U.S. as illustrative cases when introducing students to issues of inequality and to the sociological approach useful for studying and understanding these issues.
These courses also will enable you to understand the extent to which the hopefulness accompanying the end of formal apartheid is being realized at present in South Africa, and what obstacles remain in the path towards creating a just society with equal opportunity for all. This largely peaceful transition gave great hope among the people of South Africa for a new multiracial future - a rainbow nation as Bishop Desmond Tutu called it - with freedom and opportunities for all. However, from the beginning it was clear that the new nation was facing tremendous challenges as the social, racial, and economic divisions that had grown over centuries were not simply being erased overnight and the inequalities and injustices of the past would continue to create despair in the present. There also will be stops in Amsterdam and London.
