Jones  Director of bands Dr. Scott A. Jones leads The Concordia College Band. You’ll also find him in the classroom, teaching instrumental conducting and instrumental music education. Jones is mastermind behind several new initiatives on campus including the annual PRISM concert, the Concordia College High School Honor Band Weekend, and the  Wind Band Institute held on campus each summer.

From 1995 to 2005, Jones served as director of instrumental music at Apple Valley (Minn.) High School. He also served as instrumental music coordinator for the fifth through 12th-grade band programs on the west side of Independent School District 196. His teaching career began in the Teays Valley Schools in Ashville, Ohio.

Jones has nurtured the creation of 17 new compositions for wind band and chamber winds since 1999, with commissioned composers including David Gillingham, Augusta Read Thomas, Libby Larsen, Clark McAlister and others. Student musicians under Jones’ leadership have also collaborated with artists such as Frederick Fennell, Eiji Oue, Aaron Jay Kernis and Frank Battisti.

A native of Fairfax, Va., Jones received his undergraduate degree in music education from The Ohio State University in Columbus and a master’s degree in music education from the VanderCook College of Music in Chicago. In 2003, Jones completed his doctorate in music from the University of Minnesota. He was named Music Educator of the Year by the Minnesota Music Educators Association in 2002, and has served as president the Minnesota Band Directors Association. Jones was one of three school band conductors from the United States selected to participate in the 2004 National Band Association International Conducting Symposium in Rome.
