Wind Band Institute

2011 Wind Band Institute
June 27- 30  MARK YOUR CALENDARS!
Concordia College - Moorhead

The Wind Band Institute offers a unique summer opportunity for band directors to improve their teaching effectiveness in the classroom through engagement with faculty and guest artists from across the county. Sessions include specific content to increase knowledge of repertoire, instrument pedagogy, instructional strategy, philosophy, conducting, and rehearsal techniques.

According to Concordia College Director of Bands Dr. Scott A. Jones, the WBI was created in 2007 to present new perspectives and insights as well as establish connections that help rejuvenate participants. In our fifth year, we have set some lofty goals. We desire to become the nation’s leading summer opportunity for band directors wanting to improve their teaching effectiveness in the classroom. WBI recognizes that a successful music educator is not only an exceptional musician, pedagogue and technician, but also a flesh-and-blood human being who is fully engaged in changing the lives of students through the powerful medium of music. The exploration of this philosophical approach to teaching wind band provides a foundation that sets WBI apart from other workshops – and transforms the professional lives of participants in meaningful ways.

Scott Jones Conducting
This year, guest clinicians will share their unique perspectives and insights on teaching in the wind band setting. The 188th Army Band will be the Ensemble-in-residence. It promises to be an event that will invigorate, rejuvenate, and inspire all who attend!

Several Concordia College instrumental faculty will be presenting instrument-specific brush-up sessions and will also be available for individual lessons for those wishing more one-on-one time with these master pedagogues.

Designed to be an engaging and active workshop, all participants perform as part of the Institute Wind Band – so bring your instrument and conducting batons! While not designed solely as a conducting workshop, there is a conducting option for those who desire the opportunity to grow in their individual conducting skill (see registration form for further details). The Wind Band Institute provides the opportunity to both engage in music making with one another and to also explore repertoire, teaching strategies and rehearsal techniques alongside educators from across the country.
