CONCORDIA COLLEGE
CULTURAL EVENTS RECEIVES ARTS GRANT

In support of the efforts to provide arts programming in the community, Concordia College, Moorhead, Minn., applied for and was awarded a $2,000 Presenter Support grant by the North Dakota Council on the Arts.
Concordia was among 16 recipients of Presenter Support funding. This grant program is designed to benefit nonprofit organizations that are not eligible for other grant programs through the North Dakota Council on the Arts. It offers financial support for arts events and programming and supports organizations and artists in communities with a population of 6,000 or more. A total of $21,950 was awarded during this grant round.
The grant will help provide funds for the Concordia Cultural Events Series to present the Turtle Island String Quartet in March, 2009. The group will perform for the public and hold workshops and master classes March 31-April 1. The quartet derived its name from creation mythology found in Native American Folklore and since it formed in 1985, has been a singular force in the creation of bold, new trends in chamber music for strings.
Turtle Island Quartet is an extremely creative and talented group. They are known for combining the traditional notion of the string quartet with contemporary American musical style. This performance will feature selections from "A Love Supreme", winner of a 2007 Grammy, which is Turtle Island Quartet's interpretation of music written by visionary saxophonist John Coltrane. Turtle Island Quartet is also well known for their excellent work with students - and they'll work with both college and public school students during their visit.
Concordia College is a four-year liberal arts college of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America offering 78 majors, including 18 honors majors, and 12 preprofessional programs.
The North Dakota Council on the Arts is the state agency responsible for the support and development of the arts throughout North Dakota, and is funded by the state legislature and the National Endowment for the Arts.
