Photographing the Landscape and Culture of Greece
Art 311R,G
Steven Rezac, Art
Estimated seminar cost: $4,600 plus tuition $3,200
The landscape of Greece has always inspired (and, perhaps, haunted) the Western mind. The blue seas, white islands, hidden forests, soaring peaks, dazzling beaches -- all are the stuff of legend. We are looking for a team of courageous adventurers to join us as we explore one of Greece's most dramatic landscapes: the volcanic island of Santorini. Destroyed by fire and ash some time in the second millennium, this jewel of the Aegean now boasts some of the most diverse and beautiful topography in the world. Our mission is to engage the language, poetry, culture and landscape of this island; to document the cultural and physical changes that have taken place on it since the Bronze Age; and to allow the spirit of the place to touch and enter our souls. Join us.

The Hermit Kingdom: Culture, Identity and Dialogue in South Korea
Global Studies 118H,G
Vincent Reusch, English
Estimated seminar cost: $4,500 plus tuition $3,200
During this month-long summer semester abroad, we will travel throughout the South Korean peninsula. Our focus will be on not only observing, but also experiencing Korean culture in all its variety. Among other experiences, we will stay in a hanok (a traditional Korean house) in the center of Seoul, one of the largest metropolises in the world. We will spend two days at Golgulsa temple, where we will live the monk's life, meditating, practicing seonmudo (a unique martial art), and volunteering in the community. We will tour the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ), between the north and south Koreas, including a visit to Panmunjam (Peace Village), a village in the DMZ peopled jointly by north and south Koreans. During our trip to the tropical Jeju Island, we will watch the Haenyeo, female divers, diving as deep as 20 meters to harvest the sea floor, and we'll take a submarine trip to visit their underwater environment. Between our excursions, we will be housed at Jeonju University, in Jeonju, a city thought by many Koreans to be the cultural and food capital of South Korea. At JJU, we will spend time in dialogue with Korean professors and students, in and out of the classroom. Through all these experiences, we should not only gain some understanding of Korean culture, but also a better understanding of what constitutes culture, and how wildly varied and contradictory any single culture, including our own, can be.

Worship in Great Britain
Music 410
Jeff Meyer, Music
Estimated seminar cost: $4,700 plus tuition $3,200
The United Kingdom serves as a lab in this month-long study of worship. The UK is loaded with specific worship traditions and practices, including Celtic Christianity, Catholicism, the English Reformation, Wesleyan reforms, renewals within the Church of England, the Iona Community, contemporary practices, and the emerging church. We will read about worship, have conversations with musicians, scholars, and worship leaders, explore particular worship places and spaces, and (most significantly) participate in as many worship services as possible, from the very oldest traditions to the most contemporary. York and Falkirk, Scotland will be the primary centers of the program, with excursions to Lindesfarne, Durham, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Iona, and, of course, London.
Why study worship in Great Britain? The UK is rich in a variety of historic Christian worship; many of its cathedrals and historic churches are vital and lively congregations. The UK is also home to a thriving contemporary worship renewal movement that embodies a diversity of practices and ideas. By studying worship abroad in Great Britain, you will grow as a worshipper, explore the critical role of the arts in worship, and develop virtues helpful in becoming catalysts for worship renewal.
Into the Blue Sea: Greek Poetry
Classical Studies 380Z
Heather Gruber, Classical Studies
Estimated seminar cost: $4,600 plus tuition $3,200
Immerse yourself in another culture on the Greek island of Santorini, a jewel of the Mediterranean and fabled site of Plato's lost city of Atlantis. The archaeological record gives proof to a wealthy Bronze age civilization, both technologically advanced and beautifully artistic. The explosion of this volcanic island in the year 1630 BCE marks a significant date in the early history of Greece. It sparked a chain of events, leading to the creation of Western Civilization's earliest literature. Poetry was the first language of Europe's ancestors, when the singing bards who passed on the oral traditions learned a new written alphabet. Poetry is not created in a vacuum but in the context of geographical, historical, and social settings. Greek literature has shaped our way of thinking in ways that we cannot fully appreciate. To understand the heart and soul of ancient Greece, we must immerse ourselves in the modern culture. Our formal coursework will involve reading Greek poetry, both ancient and modern. Furthermore, we will study Greece's current economic crisis, practice survivalist modern Greek language skills, and take weekly field trips.

The Ethnographic Essay: Cultural Immersion in Scotland
English 380
Karla Knutson, English, and Andrew Lindner, Sociology
Estimated seminar cost: $4,995 plus tuition $3,200
A land of castles and mohawked punks in kilts, of ancient cobblestone lanes and avant-garde art, of rugged green landscapes and diverse immigrant communities, Scotland beckons the intrepid and curious adventurer. In this immersion course, we will learn the skills of ethnography experientially, observing and interviewing in urban and rural communities throughout Scotland. We'll spend ten days in Edinburgh, an incredibly well-preserved historic city with its lush public parks and its famous castle overlooking the city. Then, we will spend five days exploring the Scottish Highlands, including the Isle of Skye, enjoying the beauty of the countryside and the charm of the rural culture. Finally, we'll spend two weeks in Glasgow, a lively, modern Scottish city where friendly (if heavily-accented) residents mix with art school hipsters. Living in gorgeous loft apartments in Glasgow, each student will conduct her/his own ethnographic study of a coffeeshop, a bus line, a religious community, a bookstore, a working farm, or whatever else you can dream up. Along the way, we will meet working artists, non-profit employees working with the country's poor, and a rural dog-breeder, among others. Through our visits and the research projects, students will become deeply immersed in the culture of Scotland, seeing the country through the eyes of its residents.
