America Reads

Boys Reading America Reads is a federally-funded work-study program that sends college students into local elementary schools to serve as reading tutors. The vision of the program is to help all children learn to read well and independently by the end of the third grade.

The purpose of the America Reads program at Concordia is to foster the love of learning in order to encourage the growth of children's literacy in the Fargo-Moorhead area.

Where do students tutor?
Concordia students working for America Reads tutor at one of six elementary schools throughout the Fargo-Moorhead area.

Who coordinates the program?
The program is entirely student run with students serving as coordinators, student managers (or lead tutors) and tutors. For more information contact the current student coordinator at amreads@cord.edu.

How many students work for America Reads at Concordia?
Each semester, the America Reads program at Concordia College employs approximately 30-40 tutors.

Is it only for students with certain majors?
It is not required that students have any particular major, but only that they have a desire to help children. Tutors provide assistance in reading, but also serve as positive role models, mentors, and encouragers. Some training is provided for all tutors regarding basic reading techniques and other relevant topics.
