CONCORDIA HANDS FOR CHANGE CELEBRATES 20TH ANNIVERSARY
More than 700 first-year and transfer students at Concordia College, Moorhead, Minn., will participate in the 20th annual Hands for Change outreach event on Monday, Aug. 26, during new student orientation week. Concordia will send hundreds of volunteers out into the Fargo-Moorhead community to participate in 40 different service projects.
In 1993, Hands for Change began with a few of the orientation clubs participating and became a full-fledged Orientation event the following year. It was created in part to fulfill Concordia’s mission, but also to introduce students to their new community. Hands for Change instills the importance of service in relation to the college’s mission statement early on in a student’s college career. Over the past 20 years the number of hands that have participated totals more than 32,000.
Activities will begin with a send-off ceremony at 8:15 a.m. at the bell tower (rain site Memorial Auditorium). The 2013 Hands for Change coordinator Moriah Nelson will introduce Mayors Mark Voxland, Dennis Walaker and Rich Mattern followed by remarks from President William Craft.
Students will arrive at various service sites at approximately 9 a.m. and work until 11:30 a.m. when they will return to campus for lunch. Throughout the afternoon, students will be engaging in conversations about their service-learning experiences. Nelson and Dr. Lisa Sethre-Hofstad, associate dean of the college, will speak at the closing ceremony at 3:30 p.m.
