Experts in Education
The biology department links students directly with professionals who are doing research. The annual Fuglestad Lecture brings science experts to campus to talk with and interact with students about their work, such as two wildlife conservationists working with tigers in Laos, or an investigator who is researching the origins of plant food species.
Biology students teach elementary school students about science through the innovative Science Academy. Assisting with experiments and introducing young people to certain animal and plant life is a sure way to pique their interest in science and keep your own information fresh.
Vaccines for Africa
Two biology students led a fundraising effort on campus to purchase vaccines that fight the effects of meningitis in sub-Saharan Africa. The students also helped a professor do research on meningitis infections in microbiology class.
Do Vaccine Research
A dozen biology students are working alongside a professor’s research team in assessing the treatment and prevention of neglected tropical diseases. One potential outcome of this research is to select vaccines that might be transferred to commercial biotech industries for manufacture and distribution to developing nations.
