Andrew Olson working on his Sustainability Research grant, "Aquatic Photosynthetic Rates of Lentic Layers in Long Lake"
A central challenge facing societies around the world is how to create socially just and environmentally sustainable prosperity. Current ways of living are unsustainable, leading to ecological degradation and involving unjust social patterns. Research in a wide variety of areas, and on a wide variety of issues, is needed if we are to meet this challenge. This program enables students to spend ten weeks during the summer pursuing independent scholarly research on a sustainability-related issue, under the close supervision of an academic mentor. The program is funded by a major grant received by Concordia College to support the effort to prepare students for globally-engaged, justice-driven, and ecologically minded citizenship and leadership.
