Julie Maahs

Senior Career Coach, School of Health Professions Career Center

Julie finds joy in partnering with students and alumni to reach their job, internship, and graduate school goals. She guides students through each step of the process, including learning about strengths, values, or interests; finding opportunities; preparing application materials; and interviewing.

Julie received her Bachelor of Science in social studies education from Minnesota State University Moorhead, a certificate in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) from Bethany College, and a Master of Science in Education in student affairs administration from the University of Wisconsin–La Crosse. Julie is a Certified Career Services Provider (CCSP) through the National Career Development Association. In addition, Julie is one of 68 Nationally Certified Resume Writers (NCRW) and the only one in Minnesota. The National Resume Writers Association has extremely high standards with multiple levels of testing. Becoming a professional resume writer is Julie’s proudest professional accomplishment.

After graduating high school, Julie had no idea what she wanted to do so she did a service trip to Thailand and Vietnam. “For a while, I thought I wanted to teach English abroad, so I completed my certificate in TESOL, she says. When I started working on my bachelor’s degree, I went to a career coach to explore what I wanted to do and realized I wanted their job! It still took me a while to pick a major; I changed my major four times.”

What Julie likes most about her job is “helping students feel confident in themselves and their accomplishments. I believe that collaboration, setting manageable goals, and self-reflection can be game changers in students’ career journeys.” In addition to working with students, she enjoys spending time with her husband and two kids, caring for her houseplants, and getting back to her roots by visiting family in Canada.
