Dear Class of 2020!
Welcome to Concordia College! I am writing to you as the Associate Dean of the College who oversees the First-Year Experience Program. Your college journey begins here and now. Your experience as a first-year student at Concordia will set the stage for this next step in your life. We are excited to have you in our community of Cobbers!
Here are some things that we want you to know as you look ahead to the fall. First, you will each enroll in an Inquiry Seminar. While the topics of these seminars vary, the purpose is consistent across sections. You will grow in your ability to think critically, conduct research, consider multiple perspectives, and communicate effectively. Second, the classmates in your Inquiry Seminar will also be your classmates in either a written or an oral communication class (they are “paired” with each other). These same students also become your August orientation club (commonly referred to on campus as your “clubbies”). We have found that students enjoy this model because they get to know this group of people really well over the course of that first semester of college.
Finally, we want you to know that we are here to guide you in your academic journey through our model of advising. Each of you will be assigned an academic advisor, someone who is also a professor at Concordia, and this person will help facilitate conversations that will guide you as you make decisions. These decisions might include what courses to take and when, what your life and career goals might be, and what opportunities are available outside the classroom that will foster your learning and growth in ways that are consistent with your interests, goals and values.
We are excited to have you join the Concordia College community!
