Olaf and Verna dedicated their lives to their church and community. Olaf's parents were missionaries when he was born at Fort Dauphin, Madagascar. He graduated from St. Olaf College in Northfield and Luther Seminary in St. Paul, MN. Olaf accepted an interim call to serve Trinity Lutheran Chruch in Crookston, MN. Verna attended the University of Minnesota and in 1945 graduated with a degree in nursing. Olaf married Verna Lorraine Matson in Crookston on May 25, 1951, and together they served the Wadena/Verndale parish for 16 years. Olaf was then selected to become the assistant to the district president of what is now known as the ELCA’s Northern Minnesota District. Olaf and Verna led a life of service to their community; he was a faithful Rotarian, and she served as president for the Clay County Unit of the American Cancer Society. Their commitment to the mission of Concordia College was evidenced by Olaf’s appointment to the Concordia Board of Regents in 1964, and it came to its culmination with Olaf being honored with a doctoral degree in 1980 by the College.

The Rev. Olaf C. and Verna L. Cartford Endowed Scholarship is awarded to students by the Office of Financial Aid. Selection will be based on both scholastic achievement and financial need.
