Mary (Penrose) Glaeseman grew up in Parkers Prairie, MN. As a high school student, she was invited to participate in a journalism seminar with a faculty member at Concordia College. This meaningful connection led her to study at Concordia where she majored in English and minored in French. In addition to her studies, Mary played in the band, taught saxophone lessons, worked in the dorms and the psychology department, graduating in 1966.

Her passion for the English language and writing, cultivated by professors Dr. Walther Prausnitz and Dr. Ralph Hoppe, led her to a graduate program at the University of Utah. There Mary received a teaching assistantship. She also taught night school English classes. With limited opportunities to teach at the college level, Mary took her skills to the business world as an office worker. She enjoyed this very much and continued her commitment to lifelong learning taking night school accounting and business classes. Later she and her husband owned and operated a bed and breakfast inn.

Throughout her life and career, Mary has been active in service to her community. This continues in retirement through participation in, and support of, the arts, board service at her local library and leadership and service at church.

The Mary Penrose Glaeseman ’66 Endowed Scholarship is awarded by the Office of Financial Aid to students of any class or field of study with preference given to students majoring in education or in any of Concordia’s pre-health profession programs.
