Established on 11.06.2012 by the Estate of Calvin A. Schmidt

Calvin was born May 24, 1954, the son of Alvin E. and Lila (Thompson) Schmidt. He grew up on the family farm near Fergus Falls, where he took an active role in farming along with his brother, Keith A. Schmidt, and his parents. in 1972, Calvin graduated from Fergus Falls High School with honors. Calvin was on the Fergus Falls Otters varsity basketball team and was involved in track and field, competing in the high jump. Calvin was also in the High School Band, where he held "first chair" in the trumpet section. He was an avid piano player in his younger years. Calvin attended Fergus Falls Community College, now M State, for two years, where he received a degree in hospital administration in 1976. He purchased a home in Moorhead in 1977, where he lived until his death on December 21, 2011. After college, Calvin "Cal" started his career with Blue Cross Blue Shield of North Dakota, working in hospital contracting and in other positions. He worked with the company for his entire career, retiring in 2006. Calvin enjoyed reading books and spending time with his friends. He also took pride in his home, which he remodeled, and also his yard. 

The Calvin A. Schmidt Memorial Endowed Scholarship fund is awarded by the Office of Financial Aid to students from Fergus Falls, MN. Selection will be further based on scholastic achievement and financial need.
