Established on 11.13.2003 by the Estate of B.K. Soby

This scholarship was initially established by a gift in the will of B.K. Soby '24, Fergus Falls, Minnesota, who exemplified stewardship by his leadership in his city and many other communities during his long life. The scholarship was further funded by his son, Dayton E. Soby '61, and it will receive additional contributions at the end of Dayton's life. The J.A. Wedum Foundation has made a commitment of over $100,000 to this scholarship in honor of Dayton, who is one of the foundation's board members, consisted with its vision, "giving priority to the support of education."

J.A. Wedum was a Norwegian immigrant who became a successful businessman in Alexandria, Minnesota, and was the uncle of B.K. All of these men, believing that they had responsibility to serve others and that carrying out that responsibility provide joy and fulfillment in their lives, have lived their lives as leaders of the many communities in which they have lived and worked. Both B.K. and Dayton have been recipients of the Concordia College Alumni Achievement Award. B.K.'s wife, Lucile, Dayton's wife, Ruth, and J.A.'s wife, Louise, have supported their leadership efforts and have been community leaders themselves. This scholarship, supporting young men and women who have the proven motivation and ability to become leaders of their communities, is a fitting legacy for its donors.

The Soby Potential for Community Leadership Endowed Scholarship is awarded by the Office of Financial Aid to students who have demonstrated potential for community leadership. Selection is based on scholastic achievement.
