- If you have EVER played handbells before, even if just once back in middle school, you are encouraged to sign-up for an audition time on Tuesday, August 26th. The audition sign-up sheet will be found on the EAST door to Buxton Hall (Music 187) by the instrument storage lockers by Saturday, August 23rd. This is the same room you will audition and rehearse in.
- If you have NEVER played a handbell before, but know how to read basic music (think of piano music), you are encouraged to give bells a try by coming to the Handbells 101 Experience on Tuesday, September 2nd at 7:00 pm. Please sign up for the Handbells 101 Experience by emailing email@example.com or using the sign-up sheet on the EAST door to Buxton Hall (Music 187). If you enjoy this experience, you will be welcome to join Campana starting on Thursday, September 4th.
- Campana, for less experienced or inexperienced handbell ringers, rehearses Tuesday and Thursday nights 7:00-8:30 pm. YOU MUST be able to attend all rehearsals.
- Tintinnabula, which requires placement by audition, rehearses Tuesday and Thursday nights 8:30-10:00 pm. YOU MUST be able to attend all rehearsals.
Most students entering Concordia have never auditioned to play in a handbell ensemble before. Do NOT be intimidated!
There is nothing for you to prepare, but a chart of common handbell symbols/notations will be available by the sign-up sheet. Please review this to refresh your memory for as many techniques as possible.
Up to FOUR new students will audition at one time, and you will be blended into a mostly-full choir of returning ringers. You will be allowed to choose the position(s) you would like to audition on. You will be asked to play or mallet some rhythm exercises, then will ring portions of several pieces of music which will start VERY easy and get progressively harder and incorporate more techniques. Each section will be played twice to give you two tries.
You do not need gloves for your audition.
