With World Series appearances in back-to-back years and the franchise’s first championship in 30, our own Royal alumna is enjoying a wild ride.
Sara Grasmon '10 gave us a look into the excitement in Kansas City prior to their 2014 World Series run.
Oct. 10, 2014: Kansas City has played all the right cards, completing a royal flush of their first two foes in the Major League Baseball playoffs to reach the American League Championship Series.
Grasmon (pictured third from the left) has been building the buzz all season as manager of special events and promotions for the Royals organization.
“Right now, Kansas City is electric,” Grasmon says. “There are Royals flags and people wearing team gear all around town. Landmark buildings have been turning their lights blue, the city fountains have been dyed blue and there’s a buzz everywhere you go. It’s a special time to be part of this organization.”
Fans have waited 29 years for the Royals return to postseason prominence. The chance to create excitement around such a magical season is simply another thrilling chapter in Grasmon’s rewarding work.
“Although it’s more fun when the team is winning, we focus on providing a great value for fans through unique experiences that create a fun, festive environment and allow fans to have a memorable night at the park,” Grasmon says.
Grasmon has carried a passion for baseball her whole life. It was just a matter of deciding how she would translate that enthusiasm into a career.
“I completed a media relations internship with an independent minor league club between my junior and senior years at Concordia, and I was hooked,” she says.
After graduating, Grasmon spent two more seasons in minor league ball before being called up to the majors to join the Washington Nationals marketing team. From there, she moved into her current position with the Kansas City Royals.
“At the root of it all, baseball is my passion. So for me, the most rewarding part of my job is building fans of my team who are truly fans of the game,” she says.
