Local high school and middle school orchestra students received tips and critiques recently during the fifth Concordia String Orchestra Workshop.
“Can you hear where the accent is in that phrase?” guest clinician Jim Bartsch asked after the West Fargo Sheyenne High School students finished performing one of their pieces.
Bartsch along with Concordia Orchestra conductor Foster Beyers pointed out where the students were excelling and where there was room for improvement. Fargo and West Fargo schools participated in the workshop.
“I was thrilled to hear and work with five local schools as part of this workshop. I am so impressed with the students who gave their best in performance, yet were so open to the suggestions Jim Bartsch and I gave during the clinic,” Beyers says. “Clearly there is some excellent teaching happening in string programs all across the community.”
The secondary teachers were pleased to have another location for their students to showcase their music and have new ideas infused into their music.
“It’s good for the students to hear from someone other than me,” says Sheyenne High School orchestra teacher Mary Kate Smith. “It gives them new ideas or reinforces what they’ve been hearing.”
