Michael Chambers ’15, Blaine, Minn., utilized his experience and resources at Concordia to gain an internship in his field.
As a multimedia journalism and communication–public relations major, Chambers worked for Onsharp as a digital marketing intern this past summer.
While serving as the programs and events commissioner for the Student Government Association, Brent Johnson, Concordia’s assistant director of student leadership, informed Chambers about the internship. Chambers jumped at the opportunity to join the Onsharp team. He met with his faculty advisor and Career Center staff to learn best practices for interviews.
“The biggest preparation for this came from a course I was taking at the time, Integrated Marketing Communication,” Chambers says. “The projects we did in the class are really similar to work I do for clients. I also found my news and feature writing courses to be helpful, considering I do quite a bit of writing in this position.”
He also discovered that his role as president of the Public Relations Club helped him prepare for the interview and the job as well.
As a digital marketing intern, Chambers’ duties include content writing, community management, blogging, email marketing and research, and maintaining social media accounts for various clients. He had two major projects this summer – creating biographies for the Onsharp staff and helping to launch the Fargo Intern Group for individuals seeking an internship in the Fargo area. Chambers will continue his internship with Onsharp this fall.
With fall semester starting, Chambers has found that his experience at Onsharp will enhance the material in his upcoming courses.
“My internship has given me really great insight to what the working world is like and I'll take this knowledge back and use this to prepare for my job after graduation,” he says.
Onsharp has been very flexible in working around an academic schedule, Chambers says.
“Team Onsharp has been fantastic to work with. It has been so amazing to be with a group of people who are encouraging and supportive with everything you do,” he says. “It's really similar to the experience I've had at Concordia and I'm very grateful to have the experience Onsharp has given me.”
