Matt Gantz '14, Eagan, Minn., won first prize in the Sociologists of Minnesota Student Paper Competition for his paper, "Connecting Sociality and Professionalism: An ethnographic analysis of relationships among Scottish firemen.”
Gantz conducted the study in Glasgow during his 2012 Summer School Abroad course, "The Ethnographic Essay: Cultural Immersion in Scotland," led by Dr. Andrew Lindner, assistant professor of sociology, and Dr. Karla Knutson, assistant professor of English.
He spent part of his time in Scotland with a group of Glaswegian firemen and was on call with them during their shifts for two weeks. He then wrote about the links between firemen’s social and professional relationships.
After submitting his paper, Lindner presented Gantz and fellow classmates the opportunity to expand their writing and submit it for competition.
