Ardelle J. Tjentland, a 1957 graduate of Concordia College, was raised on a farm south of Storden, Minnesota. She earned her degree in early education and instructed elementary students for a number of years before starting a family. In July 1958, she married Robert Torkelson, and together they raised three sons, primarily in Michigan. In retirement, they returned to Excelsior, Minnesota.
Ardelle reflects fondly on her time at Concordia, especially cherishing the lifelong friendships she formed during her years on campus. Her experiences at the college left a lasting impression that continues to shape her faith, values, and perspective.
Robert Torkelson was raised outside of Luverne, Minnesota. Although he did not graduate from Concordia, he is proudly regarded as an honorary “Cobbler” by those who know of his strong connection to the college and its mission. He built a long and successful career with Ford Motor Company, where he was respected for his integrity, work ethic, and dedication.
Together, Ardelle and Robert have always cherished their Concordia ties and traditions. They look forward each year to the summer Corn Cobber Fest and are especially fond of the college’s renowned choral performances. Ardelle, in particular, holds a deep affection for the annual Concordia Christmas Concert, which remains one of her most treasured traditions.
This scholarship honors Ardelle’s lifelong commitment to education and the couple’s shared values of service, faith, community, and learning.
