CENTENNIAL SCHOLARS LECTURE

Dr. Darin Ulness, professor of chemistry, and Dr. Mark Gealy, professor of physics, along with co-inquirers: Vy Tat ’21, Brett Erickson ’20 and Leah Mork ’21, will present a lecture, “Raman Study of Halogen Bonding in Iodo-perfluoroalkane Solutions,” at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 16, in Morrie Jones Conference Center A-B, Knutson Campus Center.

The team will discuss work recently published in the Journal of Molecular Liquids. Raman spectroscopy was used to study halogen bonding between an array of different solvent molecules and a class of molecules called iodo-pefluoroalkanes. Although known for 150 years, halogen bonding has seen a surge of interest in the last 10-15 years in the areas of materials science, biology, and synthetic chemistry. Iodo-perfluoroalkanes are very good halogen bond donors so they represent a prime model system for gaining a fundamental understanding of the physics of these interactions. The group’s work contributes to that understanding.

The lecture is free and open to the public.
