THREE CONCORDIA SENIORS RECEIVE FULBRIGHTS
Jenna Scarbrough, Oliver Reitan and Ruth Peterson, all seniors at Concordia College, Moorhead, Minn., have been awarded Fulbright U.S. Student Program English Teaching Assistantships. All three students have a common affinity for German. Students studying German at Concordia have a long history of receiving Fulbrights.
As an English and Global Studies major and a German minor, Scarbrough, the daughter of Steven and Mary Scarbrough, Brookings, S.D., has previously been to India and has experienced teaching English in Rwanda on a Concordia Summer Field Studies program. Scarbrough’s Fulbright will be teaching in Malaysia.
Reitan, a German and education major, is the son of Mark and Gale Reitan, Delano, Minn., and will be teaching in Germany under the Fulbright. It fits with his plans to teach German in the United States upon returning. He’s looking to gain deeper insights into how the school system functions and the culture of Germany.
Peterson, the daughter of Greg and Laura Peterson, Richfield, Minn., is an art and German major and will be teaching in Germany for the Fulbright. She studied during the 2015-16 academic year in Bamberg, Germany, and looks forward to returning to experience a different aspect of German life through teaching.
The Fulbright Program is the flagship international educational exchange program, sponsored by the U.S. government, designed to increase mutual understanding between the people of the United States and people of other countries. Recipients of Fulbright grants are selected on the basis of academic or professional achievement, as well as demonstrated leadership potential in their fields. Since its establishment in 1946, approximately 300,000 students, scholars, teachers, artists and scientists have had the opportunity to study, teach and conduct research, exchange ideas and contribute to finding solutions to shared international concerns.
