Speech and Debate Scholarship Application

The Cobber speech and debate program is looking for talented and driven students who want to turn their passion for performance and public speaking into purposeful advocacy.

Speech and Debate Scholarships

Each year, we honor talented first-year and transfer students with our speech and debate scholarships. These four-year scholarships range in value from $1,000-$5,000 per year and are stackable with academic scholarships. Speech and debate scholarships are open to all students regardless of major or previous competitive speech and debate experience.

For questions about the speech and debate team, college speech, or scholarships, please contact Dr. Darren Valenta.

Eligibility

To be eligible for a speech and debate scholarship, you must be an incoming first-year or transfer student who has been accepted to Concordia College and exhibited proficiency in speech. Prior speech and debate competition experience is not required.

The initial screening will be based on a scholarship application. If selected as a finalist, students will:

  • Submit a brief (3-5 minute) recording of a performance, which can be wholly original or the reuse of something prepared for another purpose (e.g., high school speech competition, class, etc.).
  • Meet on campus with the director and assistant director of speech and debate for a short interview. Virtual interview options will be available to reduce potential travel and financial burdens.
