Do it if it interests you! Concordia is the safest space to try something you never thought you would. Enjoy the adventure, and make sure you have FUN. - Steph Barnhart '13

Dear Cobbers, if you feel like you don't know what you're doing, that everything is new and a wee bit terrifying, congratulations! You are trying something completely new! That's super brave! You're not supposed to know how to do it yet! Whether you're a new freshman or a new senior, you are NEW at it. Cut yourself some slack! And then, talk to the person you're nervous about talking to. I promise you, everyone else is feeling that fear too. Speak up in class. Others have the same question you do but are scared to look dumb. You won't look dumb. You'll look curious. You'll make LOTs of mistakes. So will everyone around you. It's supernormal. You've got this!! Yours, Sara Dovre Wudali
Hello Cobbers, As you explore the many options of careers out there, please consider Nursing! The variety of jobs is endless, and you can live anywhere! In ten plus years, I’ve never been bored or short on hours! - Bethany Montplaisir
Hey, Cobbers, I remember how excited I was coming to Concordia. I want you to know that you will grow so much at CC. You will make friends for life and be prepared to do whatever you choose in life. You have chosen a great college! I am a ‘80 graduate. CC was great then and now! Have a great year of discovery! - Miriam Bunge
Congratulations! You just began some of the most important years of your life. But don't let that worry you.... they are also some of the most fun. My one piece of advice, take advantage of all the things. Go on that trip abroad. Join a club. Attend homecoming with friends. These are the experiences that you will cherish forever. You got this! - Liz Eisert
Hello new Cobbers! As you begin your journey as freshmen, please be sure you make time to enjoy all the great things you are going to experience and learn. The next four years will go faster than you can imagine and the memories you make in college will be something you will never forget. Appreciate your time as a student and soak up all the great things Concordia has to offer. Look towards tomorrow but be sure to slow down and appreciate today! Soli Deo Gloria! - Nat and Becky Schmidt
You are a Cobber! Everyone will tell you that college is one of the best and most formative times of your life. I graduated in 2002, and I can tell you that they were right. But it's so much better to experience what that means, and just know that at times it's going to be hard. You'll be tired. And maybe homesick. You'll make new friends, maybe lose touch with others. And that is all okay! My four years at Concordia were fundamental to helping me adjust and thrive to life - the good and difficult - after graduation. My best friend and I were in the same orientation club and just last week she sent a random text that made me laugh out loud. You'll meet people that will be there for you, and will make you laugh, and will help you learn about life. I'm 42 and still learning so much - but it seems like just yesterday when I was a Cobber freshman. Enjoy your time, study hard (!), and have a lot of fun along the way! We are cheering for you! - Rachael Brash

Best of luck as you start this academic year! My best advice, if everything seems overwhelming, is to try to see the big picture: go somewhere or do something that helps you forget the immediate stressors about classwork or friends or money, and think of the big sweep of your time at college. You'll remember the friends that ended up becoming best friends, the things you learned in the classes, and the way your experience launched you into a career with critical thinking skills and care for all the world, not particular assignments, grades, or worries (not to say they aren't valid!) I hope your time at Concordia is fulfilling and unforgettable, and there are many people there - staff and fellow students - who will support you when it is confusing or difficult. - Riley Erlandson

Learn, of course, but try everything. My son had a tough first semester, but he tried everything. He went to Grocery bag bingo and any dorm activities. He went to openings and showings of art and music. He tried some music groups and talked to all. When he came home at the holidays, he loved Concordia. He had made friends and done many new activities. He became a DJ on Cobber Radio. On another note, my son, from CA, went to college alone. He had no friends that came with him, and he found friends with international students, many of whom were brave enough to go to college alone. So be the person who talks to the student sitting alone or invites them to sit next to you in class. You may make a huge difference and they may make a difference in you. Every day is a great day to be a Cobber. Enjoy, learn, and call or text your family. - Joy Pierce

Welcome to Cobber life. It’s exciting, challenging, and different from what you are used to. Especially for international students if there are any among you. However, give yourself time to adjust, take it a day at a time, study hard, and give it your best. It's your time to explore who you are and a beginning to being an adult. Stay positive, deal with the cultural shock, study not only your books but learn to tolerate others and know your friends. Get involved as much as possible. This is your time, make good use of it and be proud of yourselves. You are here because you deserve it and here to do even more. God bless and give you strength and wisdom for this journey you just started. - Yaa Adjekum

Welcome to the Cobber Community! I won't lie to you and tell you that the next four years of your life will be completely without struggle, but I will say that it will be a section of your life that you refer to as the most formative period for you. You will make friendship(s) that will hopefully last the rest of your life. You will be challenged to grow. You will learn things about yourself and the world around you that you hadn't known before. Your worldview will expand, and you will connect with people who will challenge and affirm your ways of thinking. Here's some advice to help get you through:
- Don't expect to have it all figured out by the end of your first year. Every year will bring with it new changes, challenges, and opportunities.
- Grab ahold of each and every opportunity to experience something new or different that you might never have a chance to do again. Study abroad, attend a spring break trip, volunteer, have conversations with your professors, network with Alumni, take a class you never thought you would. You never know where any of it might take you.
- Remember that everyone around you is there to help support your growth and learning. Don't be afraid to talk to your professors about the things related to and outside of class. Talk to your RA if you're having a rough go of it. Take advantage of your Hall Directors open office hours. Go and visit the counseling center. Talk to Kathryn and Elijah in Student Involvement. Visit the career center. Chat with folx in the office of ministry. These networks of support are built FOR YOU. And they want you to take advantage of them. Even if it seems like a scary thing the first time you do so, I promise you won't be disappointed.
- Most important of all, trust yourself. Listen to the voice inside that is telling you to do or not do something. If your major doesn't feel right, change it - you are the person who will have to live with this decision for the rest of your life. No one else. If the people you are around don't feel like they fit or fill you up, it might be time to look for new company. If a situation doesn't feel right, leave. The biggest thing you can do for yourself in the next four year is develop, listen to, and trust your intuition. It will keep you safe, it will tell you who and what to trust, and it will help you thrive for the next four years.
Today is the beginning of the rest of your life. It may feel scary or daunting. But remember that you will never be alone in the next four years if you don't want to be. You can do it, and you don't have to do it alone. - Vanessa Truelove
Welcome to Concordia and welcome to the family of Cobbers! Attending Concordia was one of the best decisions that I have made in my life. I was a first-generation student, and Concordia provided me with an exceptional liberal arts education that gave me a strong foundation of skills that I have continually pulled from throughout my life. My classes, my student employment as a marketing manager in the theater department, and the joy of spending MANY hours in the theater provided me with the communication, critical thinking, creativity, problem-solving, and writing skills that I use on a daily basis. I also have the most cherished friendships from my time at Concordia. My wish for you is that you spread your wings and fly while at Concordia! Try a new class that challenges you. Study abroad. Join an organization or club on campus that fills your soul, brings you joy, and gives you purpose. Take time to enjoy hanging out with your awesome group of friends! Remember to reach out to the resources on campus when life gets a bit overwhelming. Your Cobber community is cheering you on and wishing you success--both on campus and from around the globe! I wish you the very best now and in your future endeavors! - Linda Dorn '90
Have a great time of learning and fun at Concordia. I am proud to be a Cobber! - Renee Anderson
Welcome, welcome - from someone who feels a little like a new first-year student herself! I'm starting back at Concordia as one of your favorite librarians after being away from the Carl B. for almost 10 years. Because I worked here before (1991-2014) I can tell you that your decision to join the Concordia clan was a really smart one. This is *such* a good place. Your professors, librarians, staff and all of the people you come into contact with here really do care about you and your success. So, my one piece of advice is that you make the most of the relationships you can develop here. Stop by your professor's office just to say "hi." Drop by the library and ask a librarian a question. Visit a student support office and get to know what opportunities are available to you. We are all eager to get to know you! Good luck and as always, roll Cobbs! - Molly Flaspohler

Are you ever blessed to be starting your post-high education at Concordia!! As I look back on my long career (and life) I rank my four years at Concordia as the best years of my life - the friends, the professors, the opportunities. I sang in the Concordia Choir for four years under Paul J. Christensen - and travelled to Norway in the summer of 1958.
