Charles L. Beck M.D. attended Concordia his freshman year, 1963-64. Many in his family had been Concordia graduates, and he felt that a smaller campus would be a good first fit. He was looking to major in science and was recruited to run for the track team.

Chuck had grown up singing in his church choir, his school choir, playing saxophone in band, and enjoying 3 sports at Fergus Falls High School. He was a local boy, not quite dedicated to high grades yet, but was competitive in all his interests and determined to improve upon his high school academics.

While his “right-brain” activities were always important to him, it was his father’s persistence that with enough dedication, he could use his “left brain” strengths to get into medical school. Chuck studied, made good friends, and ran track for the Cobbers before transferring to the University of Minnesota where he graduated in zoology and went on to medical school to become an accomplished Radiologist. He served as chief resident, graduating Phi Beta Kappa, and was president of his specialty group in Corvallis, OR. He was known to be the one to take time to explain all things “radiology” to students, patients, neighbors, and family.

Chuck was a kind and respected person with friends who walked the path of life with him, playing golf, skiing a slope, or catching steelhead; he was a much-loved Dad; an engaging and humble husband; a loyal and enjoyable son, brother, and family man. Lynne, his life partner and wife these last 30 years was also a pre-med graduate and spent her professional career in the pharma-bio-tech field as a business unit analyst and product trainer of life sciences and disease management.

Chuck worked hard with both sides of his brain, his hands, and his heart. That’s why this scholarship will benefit both a science and art-focused student in alternate years. No matter your chosen interest, the Beck family believes you have talent when you show grit and persist through the hard years to reach your potential. For that is the difference for any “split-brain” decisions, to be determined.

The Dr. Charles L. ’67 and Lynne A. Beck Family Endowed Scholarship is awarded by the Office of Financial Aid to one or more students of any class majoring in any art program and, on alternating years, students in the pre-medicine program or those majoring in clinical laboratory science or healthcare leadership. Selection is further based on scholastic achievement and financial need.
