Established on 03.20.2014 by Dr. Alan Hopeman '42

Dr. Alan and Dorothy Hopeman left a mark at Concordia College of service and leadership. Dorothy came to Concordia to study home economics. She was active in LDS, serving as president. She also served as president of Fjelstad Hall, secretary of the Lutheran Daughters of the Reformation and was selected as Homecoming Queen. Alan grew up in the shadows of Concordia on the family farm, working for his father throughout college. A member of AES, he served as president of the intersociety council, was a standout on the football, basketball and track teams, was a nationally ranked competitor in forensics and was president of the student body. Dorothy and Alan received their degrees in home economics and chemistry (pre-med), respectively, in 1942. They wed in 1943 and were blessed with five children. Dorothy was a teacher, mother, artist and volunteer. Alan retired after a long and successful career as a cardiothoracic surgeon in the U.S. Army and at the Universities of Missouri, Nebraska and Colorado. Together, Alan and Dorothy collected art from around the world, art which Alan continues to show and share.

The Hopeman Family Endowed Scholarship is awarded by the Office of Financial Aid. Selection is based on scholastic achievement and financial need.
