Joel Thorsrud was born in Hillsboro, N.D., on August 18, 1949. He graduated from Hillsboro High School in 1967 and attended Concordia College for one year before transferring to North Dakota State University where he received a BS degree in agronomy in 1973.

He began his farming career in 1969 after helping on the farm prior to that. During his farming career, he had the opportunity to serve on the North Dakota Soybean Council and the United Soybean Board to promote soybeans. Perhaps most meaningful was seeing soy protein being used to feed the malnourished around the world.

Joel never married and is now retired but still likes to think of himself as an old, Norwegian, bachelor farmer.

Even though Joel did not participate in the Concordia music program, he has often been inspired by it. He is grateful for the opportunity to help the Concordia College music program

The primary purpose of the Joel M. Thorsrud Music Endowed Fund is to support two initiatives within the music department: instrumental touring ensembles and educational outreach programs that introduce high school students to music at Concordia, with special consideration given to the Honors Strings Orchestra or similar programs, and the purchase and maintenance of instruments within the music departments
