A recent issue of The American Association of Colleges and Universities’ magazine, Liberal Education, features an article about systemic racism written by Dr. Michelle Lelwica, professor of religion at Concordia.

“The Power of Proximity: Embodying Anti-Racist Learning” details Lelwica’s Religion, Race, and Social Justice course, which includes a weekly visit to a local juvenile detention center. She created the course after feeling an urgency to her help students and herself “grow our capacity to not just intellectually grasp but care about the catastrophic consequences of systemic racism.”

The article also discusses Lelwica’s research project that focused on a compassionate approach to juvenile justice.
