Concordia College’s Centennial Scholars Lecture explores food, gender and culture through church cookbook

MOORHEAD, Minn. — Dr. Karla Knutson, professor of English at Concordia College, will present the 2023-2024 Centennial Scholars Lecture, "Food, Gender, and Culture in Central North Dakota: Church Cookbooks and Women’s Lives in the Mid-Twentieth Century," at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 30 in the Friday Nilsen Lounge, Fjelstad Hall.

Knutson reflect on her current research project, cooking — and learning — her way through “The Joy of Sharing.” The book is a compilation of recipes contributed by women in Velva, North Dakota, and compiled in 1985. With her project, Knutson hopes to provide clarity and context, illustrating the cultural forces that shaped women’s lives at that particular historical moment and in that location.

The event is free and open to the public.

People who are interested can learn more on her project’s blog at blog.cord.edu/karlaknutson/cookbook-project/.
