CONCORDIA OPENS ACADEMIC YEAR
Celebration includes traditional Beanie Toss and President’s final convocation address

Concordia College, Moorhead, Minn., starts the 2022-23 academic year with opening convocation at 9:30 a.m., Thursday, Aug. 25, in Memorial Auditorium. The convocation officially opens the 132nd academic year.

The procession into Convocation will be similar to the commencement procession. Faculty will line the sidewalk for first-year students to process through. An upper-class student will lead the first-year Convocation procession carrying the 2026 class flag.

The program will include an address by Dr. Michael Chan, the new executive director for Faith and Learning; a greeting by Student Government Association president, Hannah Paysse ’24; and a welcome and declaration of the opening of the academic year by provost and dean of the college, Dr. Susan Larson. The program also features President William Craft giving a “Call to Engagement”; the Reverends Dave and Kim Adams, campus pastors; and music by The Concordia Band.

This will be President Craft’s final convocation address as he announced he is retiring in June 2023. Dr. Craft became Concordia’s 11th president in 2011.

Immediately following convocation, the traditional Beanie Toss will take place on Olin Hill at approximately 10:10 a.m. (Please arrive early for this great visual in case convocation ends sooner.)

Concordia College is a four-year liberal arts college of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America offering more than 50 majors, including 17 honors majors and 13 preprofessional programs.
