Most are the same. We have Informative, Persuasive, After-Dinner Speaking, Communication Analysis, Extemporaneous, Impromptu, Prose, Poetry, Drama, Duo and Program of Oral Interpretation.

College speech tends to tackle a broader range of topics when compared with high school speech. You won’t be limited in your choice of topics. We focus on the topic’s relevancy to society and to you personally. We want you to talk about things that matter to you. We also travel farther than you do in high school. Our tournaments take us all across the country.

Nothing! Concordia College supports the speech team by providing a budget that covers travel, registration, lodging, and meals. Concordia also offers some generous scholarships ($2,000 to $6,000 annually) to talented speech students.

Our season runs the full academic year and we will travel six to eight weekends per semester. Most tournaments are “swings” – two tournaments in one weekend. We ask our competitors to travel at least three weekends per semester (there are 15 weeks in each semester). Our national tournament (AFA-NIET) is in early April each year.

You get out of the activity what you put into it. We require that you attend our team meeting (one hour a week), team practice (two hours a week) and practice at least 30 minutes per event with a coach each week, along with some peer coaching. However, if you want to be competitively successful, you need to put in additional work outside of this as well.
