Theatre Scholarship Application

Theatre Scholarships

Concordia awards annual scholarships to recognize excellence in the following areas of theatre: lighting, scenery, costumes, sound, stage management, and performance.

Scholars are required to participate in the program but not major in theatre art.

Theatre Performance and Production Scholarships were created to recognize excellence in theatre and the potential for exceptional contributions to the Concordia community. In order to maintain the award, recipients participate at a significant level as cast or crew members in each main stage and lab theatre production during their time as a Concordia theatre scholar as well as participate in three theatre courses during their first four semesters at Concordia.

Theatre scholarship amounts range in value and are stackable with academic scholarships. Applicants do not have to be theatre majors, but award recipients are expected to have significant involvement with each of the four mainstage shows and select theatre courses. Theatre scholarships cannot be combined with other talent scholarships (visual arts, speech and debate, or music), but students will be given a choice of which to accept if offered multiple talent scholarships.

Please reach out to Andrew Bates with any questions regarding theatre scholarships.

Deadline

Feb. 1, 2025: Deadline for students hoping to complete a finalist audition on Feb. 17, 2025, in Moorhead.
(Feb. 1 is the final deadline for all students applying for Fall 2025.)

Eligibility

To receive a theatre scholarship, you must:

  • Apply and be accepted for admission to Concordia College as an incoming first-year or transfer student
  • Have at least a 3.0 cumulative GPA (non-weighted)
  • Exhibit excellence in theatre performance or production
  • Submit a theatre scholarship application
  • Attend a live finalist interview on Nov. 23 or Feb. 17

The initial screening will be based on a scholarship application, which includes a theatrical resume, essay, recorded audition videos, and/or a technical work portfolio.

  • Your resume should include performance and/or technical experience. The essay topic for your application is: "How do the talents and skills of theatre prepare you for a meaningful life and contribute positively to the world?" Your essay must be double-spaced and should be at least one page but no more than three pages.
  • If auditioning for a performance scholarship, please prepare two different video-recorded selections to demonstrate your range of abilities. Each selection should be 1-2 minutes long. You may also choose to prepare up to one minute of a vocal music performance as part of your audition, preferably accompanied by piano. You are not evaluated on the production quality of your audition video but by your interpretation and execution of the material.
  • If interviewing for a technical/production scholarship, you are asked to provide a digital portfolio. This may include, but is not limited to: materials, pictures, drawings, and scripts that showcase your involvement. Your involvement in technical theatre may span multiple departments (costumes, stage management, lighting, sound, etc.) or only highlight one or two. The most important element is that you are showcasing any/all of your abilities and interests.
