Dr. Drew Rutherford

Associate Professor, Chemistry Chemistry

Dr. Drew Rutherford was born in Illinois to parents from the East Coast and, despite moving around a number of times, grew up in the Midwest. He graduated high school from Worthington, MN, and went on the attend the University of Minnesota-Morris, earning a BA with majors in Biology and Chemistry. He moved to North Dakota to attend graduate school at North Dakota State University, where he earned his master’s (organic chemistry) and Ph.D. (inorganic chemistry). He and his wife, Julie, then moved to Salt Lake City, UT, for their postdoctoral training at the University of Utah. After nearly two years away, they returned to the Fargo area to teach at Concordia College, where they have been happily teaching in their respective fields for more than 20 years. Dr. Rutherford has taught courses across the chemistry curriculum including chemistry for non-majors, general chemistry (honors and traditional), spectroscopy, inorganic chemistry, and organic chemistry. For a time, he even taught within the introduction to the liberal arts curriculum for first-year students. For the past 20 years, he has focused his teaching energies on the year-long organic chemistry lecture and labs. As part of the second-semester laboratory, an award-winning, grant-initiated, student-led endeavor has been implemented that simulates pharmaceutical drug-design methodology and highlights liberal-arts training coupled to scientific inquiry. Dr. Rutherford has published 39 scientific articles in peer-reviewed journals (a number with undergraduate co-inquirers) and over 35 poster presentations centered around the synthesis of interesting materials, specifically biologically active organic molecules, and organometallic catalysts. He has been awarded over $500,000 in grants from various funding agencies, including the National Science Foundation (NSF), USDA, Research Corporation, and The Dreyfus Foundation. On the personal side, he has enjoyed numerous random hobbies, but of late, he has been fortunate enough to earn a spot on the United States Rifle Team that will represent the United States at the World Championships in 2023 in Bloemfontein, South Africa. He is the current US F-Class Midrange National Champion and a shooting member of this year’s gold-medal-winning national midrange team.
