Dr. Lisa A. Twomey

Associate Professor of Spanish; Director of Community Engagement Spanish, World Languages and Cultures, Master of Education, Community Engagement

Dr. Lisa Twomey earned a bachelor’s degree in English and Spanish from Marquette University in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and a master’s degree in Spanish literature from New York University in Madrid, Spain. She completed a doctorate in Spanish literature at the Complutense University of Madrid, where she studied the critical reception of Ernest Hemingway’s works in postwar Spain.

She first joined the faculty at Concordia College in 2004 teaching all levels of Spanish language, culture, film, and literature, as well as courses in the first-year experience and Master of Education in World Language Instruction programs. Her research interests are varied and include 20th-century Spanish literature, theories and practices of intercultural communicative competence and citizenship, world language teaching pedagogy, storytelling, and Hemingway’s relationship with Spain. She loves creating opportunities for students to connect their learning to the world around them by pushing them beyond the proverbial four walls and into engaging experiences in the community. She began her new role as director of community engagement on June 1, 2024.
