Established on 12.18.2018 by Dr. John and Janice Malvey  †

Born and raised in Moorhead, MN, John grew up two blocks from campus and saw firsthand the close family connections that make Concordia College so special. With his father, Carrol “Shorty” Malvey, and three of Carrol’s siblings, plus John’s older sister, Karen, all attending Concordia, John felt called to “follow in their footsteps.”  He participated in the football and tennis teams and graduated magna cum laude in 1967 with a major in biology and minors in math and chemistry. It was after leaving Concordia that John grew to appreciate the importance and value of attending a small Christian college and its role in developing a well-rounded education and person. He feels his academic success, along with Concordia’s strong reputation, gained him acceptance into graduate school at the University of Iowa, where he earned a Ph.D. in physiology & biophysics.

John and his wife, Janice, also a Moorhead resident, have been strong and avid Cobber supporters for many years.  John was blessed to have very involved parents on campus, with his father, Carrol, serving on Concordia’s Board of Regents, and both of his parents serving as major fundraisers for the Christensen football stadium campaign. Although John’s mother was a St. Olaf graduate, she became a Cobber at heart.

John and Janice’s oldest son, Craig, also graduated magna cum laude from Concordia in 1992 and was a recipient of the Faculty Scholarship Award. Like his father, he went on to attend medical school at the University of Iowa. (They believe it was the Concordia connection, and not the Malvey name, that got him in!)

Thankful for a wonderful experience at Concordia and in appreciation for the Faculty Scholarship Award for their son, John and Janice are thrilled to “pay it forward” by establishing the Malvey Family Endowed Scholarship.

The Malvey Family Endowed Scholarship is awarded by the Office of Financial Aid to students majoring in the sciences. Selection is based on scholastic achievement and financial need.
