Art Molvik ‘64 went to high school through his junior year in Karlstad, MN, then graduated from Grand Forks Central. During his senior year of high school, he read the book “Project Sherwood” that persuaded him to make fusion energy his life’s work. While at the University of Wisconsin Grad School in Madison, he met and married Kathy.

Concordia gave him a good grounding in physics. Just as importantly, it also gave him a good grounding in the liberal arts, which prepared him for life outside of work, and considering whether his work was potentially benefiting the world, or whether he should adjust his direction. One way to view a liberal arts education is that the physical sciences seek to make our lives easier and more comfortable. The liberal arts seek to make life worth living.

During Covid, Art began keeping in touch with physics/math classmates through monthly video meetings that he hosts.

Attending the annual Christmas Concert was a highlight each year, before, during, and whenever possible after attending Concordia. Singing in Concordia Choir for one year was the most memorable part of Art’s education. Music has continued to be an important part of Art’s and Kathy’s lives as they continue to sing in choirs and enjoy listening to other music.

After visiting Concordia for Christmas Concerts and Homecomings, Kathy wishes she had known about Concordia during her high school years. Art and Kathy appreciate the opportunity to provide a student scholarship to help future scientists and musicians afford their education.
