Concordia celebrates Lutheran College Washington Semester’s 40th anniversary
The Lutheran College Washington Semester is commemorating its milestone 40th anniversary in September, marking four decades of providing undergraduate students with transformative academic and professional opportunities in the nation's capital.
Concordia College has been sending students to Washington through the program since 2001.
“There were no boring days,” said Erik Wallevand ’19. “LCWS gave me the access and ability to see and do everything that Washington, D.C., had to offer. It also provided great opportunities to develop new professional relationships and friendships and learn how to present and promote yourself in the working world.”
Founded in 1986, LCWS is a small, personalized program that enrolls students from partner colleges and universities across the country for a “study away” semester. Through professional development in a competitive internship placement, academic inquiry in engaging classes, and immersive participation in the day-to-day life of Washington, D.C., students gain valuable work experience and a new perspective on what it means to be active and engaged citizens of the world.
Dr. Rebecca Moore, professor of political science at Concordia, currently serves as vice president of the LCWS board of directors.
“Living and working in Washington, D.C., has been a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity that continues to shape my professional goals,” Kyler Gohlke ’26 said.
As part of the 40th anniversary celebration, LCWS is launching a fundraising initiative to expand the Dean Nancy D. Joyner Scholarship Fund, which provides a stipend to students with unpaid internships. The ultimate goal of the campaign is to guarantee every student a paid internship.
