Greiner Named Women's Hockey Coach

Concordia Athletic Director Rachel Bergeson announced that former Augsburg and St. Thomas assistant coach Maureen (Hardwick) Greiner has been named the new women's hockey head coach.

"The hiring of Maureen is a big step for our women's hockey team," Bergeson said. "Her knowledge of the MIAC, ability to coach teams that are highly successful and background in high school hockey in the area make her a tremendous asset to the program."

Greiner, who returns to Concordia after serving as an assistant coach for the program for the 2011 season, recently served as the assistant coach at Augsburg during the 2018 campaign where she helped the Auggies finish third in the league standings and advance to the conference semifinals. Her time at Augsburg followed a six-year stint at St. Thomas where she was a part of a pair of MIAC regular season championships, four conference playoff title teams and six straight trips to the MIAC playoffs. Greiner also helped the Tommies earn the program's first-ever berth in the Frozen Four in 2014.

In addition to her collegiate experience, Greiner was also the assistant coach at Minnetonka High School when the Skippers won the Minnesota High School AA State Championship in 2012 and 2013.

"I am thrilled for this new opportunity and can't wait to get started as head coach," Greiner said. "Concordia has had a great tradition of women's hockey and Jason (former coach Jason Gregoire) did an outstanding job of recruiting and continuing on the success of the team. I am excited to see where the team can go from here."

Greiner is a product of the MIAC, having graduated from St. Thomas in 2006 with a degree in legal studies in business. She played both hockey and golf for the Tommies from 2002-06 and was an eight-time All-MIAC honoree in both sports. Greiner was a two-time individual MIAC champion and All-America Honorable Mention in golf. She was just as productive on the ice for St. Thomas as she finished her career with 56 goals and 142 career points which, at the time, ranked third on the UST career list and in the top 20 in MIAC history. As a senior, she was the NCAA Division III statistical champion in assists per game.

While playing at St. Thomas, she began coaching with Highland Central Youth Hockey from 2003-06 and trained hockey players of all ages on and off the ice as the lead instructor at Total Hockey Training Center in Eagan, Minn., from 2004-10. She was also an assistant varsity coach at Eastview High in Apple Valley, Minn., from 2006-10.

Greiner attended Warroad (Minn.) High School, where she graduated in 2002. While at Warroad, she was an honor student and all-state athlete in hockey, golf and softball. Greiner was inducted into the Warroad Athletic Hall of Fame in the fall of 2009.

Greiner will begin her coaching duties on Aug. 1. The Cobbers' first game in the 2018-19 season is slated for Friday, Oct. 26, when Concordia heads to WIAC regular-season champion Wisconsin-River Falls.
