‘Three Bears’ opera collaboration earns national recognition

Concordia College Opera has been awarded second place (tie) in Division II of the National Opera Association’s Opera Production Competition for its commissioned orchestral version of Jonathan Stinson’s “The Three Bears.” The honor places Concordia among the top collegiate opera programs nationwide.

For Concordia, the recognition carries particular significance. “The Three Bears” marked the first collaboration between the college’s opera, theatre, and orchestra — a partnership that strengthened the production and showcased the talents of students, faculty, and staff across disciplines.

“I am deeply honored,” said Dr. Robin Griffeath, director of the college’s opera program and associate professor of voice. “Producing an opera demands extraordinary effort and collaboration from a diverse team of dedicated artists, and it has been immensely rewarding to work alongside such talented colleagues. I’m thrilled that this partnership has taken root and look forward to joining forces again.”

The two organizations will partner again for the February 2026 production of Pauline Viardot’s “Cinderella,” with performances at 8 p.m. Feb. 12-14 and 2 p.m. Feb. 15 at the Frances Frazier Comstock Theatre. For more information, visit ConcordiaCollege.edu/Mainstage.
