2017 WERTH LECTURE AT CONCORDIA
Dr. Jahan M. Dawlaty will present the 2017 Werth Lectures, “Light, Electrons, Protons: Lessons from Model Systems and Potentials for Photocatalysis,” at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, March 30, in Barry Auditorium, Grant Center; and “A Career in Basic Science: My Story with Concordia Roots” at 3:30 p.m. Friday, March 31, in Jones A/B, Knutson Campus Center.
Dawlaty, a 2001 Concordia graduate, is an assistant professor of chemistry at the University of Southern California. As the world continues to increase its need for energy, understanding and utilizing reactions where absorbed light energy is stored in chemical products is essential for solar light harvesting and sustainable energy technologies. Dawlaty seeks to answer what makes a photocatalytic reaction work, and how it can be optimized, and harnessed for light harvesting.
Upon receiving his bachelor’s in chemistry from Concordia, Dawlaty earned his doctorate at Cornell University. He then completed a postdoctoral position at the University of California – Berkeley. At USC, Dawlaty is rapidly publishing his work and has received the National Science Foundation CAREER award and the Air Force Office of Scientific Research Young Investigator Award. He is also a Cottrell scholar.
The Richard G. Werth Lecture in Chemistry is funded by an endowment established by Richard’s wife, Wilma, and their son, Gerald, to exemplify excellence in the teaching of chemistry, and to promote an understanding of the many careers in chemistry. Werth taught at Concordia from 1950 to 1990 and in 1993.
The lectures are free and open to the public.
