CONCORDIA HONORS ALUMNI WITH AWARDS

DURING HOMECOMING 2018

Concordia College announces 2018 Alumni Achievement Awards to Charles Beck ’48 (posthumous award), Dr. Richard Sibley ’67, Darnell Carter ’75 and Claudia Swendseid ’78. Awards will be presented at the Homecoming Banquet, Friday, Sept. 28.

Charles Beck ’48 (posthumous award), a former naval pilot, completed his master’s degree in art at the University of Iowa. He taught printmaking, drawing, painting and art history at Minnesota State Community and Technical College, Fergus Falls, Minn., from 1960-87. A revered Midwestern regional artist, Beck produced woodcut prints, wood carvings and oil paintings. Known for its vivid representation of Minnesota, his work has been exhibited across the country and he’s been honored with several awards.

Dr. Richard Sibley ’67
has been the co-medical director in Anatomic Pathology at Stanford University where he’s taught pathology since 1986 and led as medical director of Clinical Laboratories and associate chair for Clinical Services. He is a known expert on anatomic and surgical pathology. After earning his M.S. and M.D., he received academic training and experience at five prestigious medical centers and has published a daunting 182 professional papers, 23 book chapters and numerous articles.

Darnell Carter ’75 is a retired assistant prosecuting attorney for Clark County, Ohio, where he tried many capital murder cases and was appointed head of the criminal division in 2005. He was one of the first, in 1988, to gain a conviction based primarily on DNA evidence, an emerging science at the time. His awards include being named Assistant Prosecuting Attorney of the Year in 2007 and earning the Governor’s Commendation and Resolution.

Claudia Swendseid ’78
served 31 years at the Federal Reserve Bank of Minneapolis before retiring as the senior vice president in 2017. Swendseid’s contributions have led to innovation and improvement of many of the Reserve’s processes, notably converting much of its payments from paper to digital form. She also promoted changes that eliminated operational costs, saving the bank millions annually. In addition, her community involvement includes work with United Way, Community Thread and Valley Outreach, among others.

Chosen by the National Alumni Board, the Alumni Achievement Award is given to alumni who have exemplified the ideals of Concordia College through outstanding service and leadership in their profession, community and church.
