FIFTH ANNUAL CARUS LECTURE AT CONCORDIA

Concordia College will present the fifth annual Carus Lecture in Philosophy, "Stuck on You: Thinking Parasitically,” featuring Dr. Lisa Heldke at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 26, in the Centrum, Knutson Campus Center. The lecture is free and open to the public.

Heldke will discuss what happens to the human individual if we take seriously that all life is threaded through with relationships in which one creature sinks its “teeth” into another, deriving vital sustenance from that second creature, but sometimes imperiling the life of it as well?

Heldke is professor of philosophy for Gustavus Adolphus College. She earned her bachelor’s degree from Gustavus and a master’s and doctorate from Northwestern University. She has published numerous articles as well as authored or co-edited four books.

Concordia College created the Carus Professorship in Philosophy and the Carus Lectureship in recognition of gifts from the charitable trusts established by M. Elisabeth Carus and her brother Alwin C. Carus. The Carus’ grew up at LaSalle, Ill., and attended the University of Chicago, where Alwin established strong, lifelong connections that represented his deep interests in philosophy, science and religion.
