CONCORDIA CELEBRATES MARTIN LUTHER KING JR. DAY

Moorhead, Minn. -- Concordia College invites the public to reflect on the life and influence of Martin Luther King Jr. on Monday, Jan. 16. This year’s MLK Day theme is “Generated by Love: Let our Voices be Heard and Works be Seen.”

Where do we go from mass incarceration, voter suppression, police brutality, and a continued, exhaustive list of perpetuated injustices in this country and our communities? Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. stated that “Power at its best is love implementing the demands of justice. Justice at its best is love correcting everything that stands against love.” We’ll examine current challenges while identifying tangible action steps needed to address them.

Keynote speakers include Mariah Parker, is a linguistics scholar, former Georgia County Commissioner, rapper and organizer with Raise Up the South, the Southern arm of the Fight for $15 and a Union workers movement; and Rev. Kenneth Wheeler ’74, a retired ordained pastor in the ELCA and sought-after preacher, public theologian, and writer. Faith Shields-Dixon, a Chicago native who relocated to North Dakota and a prominent voice in Fargo’s Black Lives Matter demonstrations is a panelist. She is an entrepreneur and founder of Faith4Hope, and owns and founded Children of Hope Childcare and Urban Beauty Supply.

The day’s events begin with a breakfast and conversation 9 a.m. in the Centrum, Knutson Campus Center; keynote addresses at 9:45 a.m. and 1 p.m. in Memorial Auditorium; a panel discussion at 2:30 p.m. in the Centrum; concurrent sessions at 11 a.m. and 3:45 p.m.; and a reading and book signing by Wheeler at 7:30 p.m. in the Centrum.
