CONCORDIA CELEBRATES MARTIN LUTHER KING JR. DAY

Concordia College invites the public to reflect on the life and influence of Martin Luther King Jr. on Monday, Jan. 17. This year’s MLK Day theme is “Daring to Dream: The Radical Imagination of a New Generation.”

The theme calls upon the community to confront and acknowledge the amount of work that King called us to do that has yet to be completed in a way that produces equitable outcomes for all. While history books write as if King’s focus was primarily on the rights of Black Americans, he sought to recognize and address the intersections of all forms of oppression. Student Planning Committee co-chairs of MLK Day are Mattie Bogart ’23 and Alissa Edjacin ’24.

Keynote speakers include Payton Head, a rising community leader rooted in developing action-oriented cultures grounded in equity, inclusion, and opportunity; and Derecka Purnell, a human rights lawyer, writer, organizer, and author. Panelists include Chicago native now North Dakota resident Faith Dixon, an entrepreneur and founder of Faith4Hope, a nonprofit organization committed to helping low-income families; and Wess Philome, a community activist originally born in Little Haiti.

The day’s events begin with a chapel service at 9 a.m. in the Centrum, Knutson Campus Center; keynote addresses at 9:45 a.m. and 1 p.m. in Memorial Auditorium; and a panel discussion with panelists and keynote speakers at 2:30 p.m. in the Centrum. Concurrent sessions take place at 11 a.m. and 4:15 p.m.
