CENTENNIAL LECTURE AT CONCORDIA
Comparing and contrasting two brilliant philosophers
Moorhead, Minn. – Dr. Richard Gilmore, professor of philosophy, will present a Centennial Scholars Lecture at 4 p.m. Friday, Nov. 18, in Bishop Whipple 144 at Concordia College. The lecture, “The Crack in Everything: Emerson and Žižek on the Dialectical Nature of Philosophy and the World,” is free and open to the public.
Ralph Waldo Emerson, a one-time Unitarian minister, is often described as staid and serious, whereas Slavoj Žižek, celebrated for his boldness, is described by The Chronicle of Higher Education as “The Elvis of Cultural Theory” and The New Republic as “the most dangerous philosopher in the West.” In Gilmore’s lecture, he surprisingly argues they are saying the same things.
Centennial Scholars Lectures are awarded each year to faculty to support activity in their own academic disciplines.
