LORENTZSEN CENTER VIRTUAL CONVERSATION

The Lorentzsen Center for Faith and Work, part of the Concordia College Offutt School of Business, will present a February Virtual Conversation, “Precarious Labor in the Gig Economy: In Search of Workplace Security,” from 7-8:30 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 2. The virtual conversation is one of the 2020-21 online panel conversations exploring “good work and its future.” Programs are open to the public and free of charge on Tuesday evenings. Speakers are Joe Raso, Dr. Shelly Steward and Willy Solis.

Raso is president and CEO of Fargo Moorhead Economic Development Corporation and Steward is director of research for Future of Work Initiative, The Aspen Institute. Solis is a gig worker for Shipt.com and lead organizer for Gig Workers Collective.

As a result of globalization, economic recession, corporate downsizing, and other events, 20th-century patterns of enduring and secure employment have given way to growth of contingent workers in a new and variously termed “share,” “on-demand,” “1099” or, most commonly, “gig” economy.  A new class of independent contractors has emerged in response to unstable and insecure work. While this gig economy still represents a small part of U.S. employment, it brings significant changes to the life of work and raises critical questions about the future of work in a context of employment instability and insecurity.

The webinar is free. Please register at ConcordiaCollege.edu/businessevents. Call (218) 299-3305 for more information.

The Lorentzsen Center honors the life and work of Norman M. Lorentzsen. He was an esteemed philanthropist, former CEO of Burlington Northern, alumnus of Concordia and former member and chair of its Board of Regents. The center identifies and sustains ethical values and practices in individuals and organizations.
