CLASSICAL STUDIES PRESENTS I.F. GROSE MEMORIAL LECTURE

The classical studies department at Concordia College will present the I.F. Grose Memorial Lecture in Classical Studies, featuring Dr. Yurie Hong at 7 p.m. Wednesday, March 20, in the Morrie Jones Conference Center A-B, Knutson Campus Center. The lecture, “Birthing Ideas in Ancient Greece and the Modern World: A Personal and Professional Story,” is free and open to the public.

Hong, chair and associate professor of classics at Gustavus Adolphus College, will speak about ancient and modern reproductive medicine. Her research focuses on representations of pregnancy and childbirth in ancient Greek literature, which she believes can help us think more deeply about modern life and society. Hong chaired the 2017 Nobel Conference, “Reproductive Technologies: How Far Do We Go?” held at Gustavus, an event that compares the science and ethics behind a topic.

Hong earned her bachelor’s degree from the University of California, Los Angeles, and a master’s and doctorate from the University of Washington, Seattle.

This annual lecture series is named after Ingebrikt Fretheim Grose, Concordia’s first president (1891-1893). He was only 29 years old when he took up the reins, and was trained as a classicist. In the spirit of I. F., the purpose of the Grose Lecture is to foster the work of classicists who are advancing through the early and middle stages of their careers, and to bring to Concordia cutting-edge research and newest ideas in the field.  This lecture series is made possible by the generous contributions of Dr. Charles Grose in honor of his grand-uncle.
